Phil Keaggy: former power-rocker

Sitting in the car with Dad, listening to the good old classics of the ’70s, like Alice Cooper’s “School’s out,” or The Kinks’ “Lola.” Good times.

Phil Keaggy was on his way to becoming one of these rock legends; in fact, his band Glass Harp opened for many of the power-rockers you listened to with your dad back in the day.

But then Keaggy’s life was met with calamity. Just when Glass Harp was beginning to reach a level of notoriety, Keaggy’s mother died. He turned to God, inevitably changing the course of Glass Harp’s future — Keaggy left the band after becoming a Christian.

He then found his place as a solo artist in the Christian music scene, and has been given all sort of awards within his 30-year career.

So does he regret not becoming famous? Not really.

“I’d rather be pegged as a religious guitar guy than not be associated at all with Him Who loved me and gave Himself for me,” he says.

If you live in the Vancouver area, you can take in Keaggy’s music on Saturday, November 23 at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey. He’ll be raising awareness and support for the South Fraser Pregnancy Options Centre.

In addition to the Saturday night concert, Keaggy will also headline a special guitar clinic and fan event at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver on Friday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for both events can be purchased online at Frontofthelineproductions.com or by calling (604) 788-3164.
