Graffiti to save closing church

Graffiti in the Catholic Church in Goldsheuer

With the help of 32-year-old graffiti artist Stefan Strumbel, a run-down Catholic church in Goldsheuer Germany can be saved from closure.

Mary, Help of Christians Church was built 50 years ago in a town where nearly half of the locals are Catholics. However, recently it became apparent that only 3 per cent of the faithful were turning up at mass on Sunday mornings. With hopes of drawing back the faithful to mass, the dreary, gym-like interior is being transformed into something more modern and attractive.

However, the proposition of the new image of the church shocked the Goldscheuer parish council. Perhaps the approach of new art and graffiti was more blasphemous than good?
